Brief History

A Village Built Around Its Trees

Royal Palm Beach sits on land that was once a swampy hunting ground of the Seminole people, with little permanent settlement until well into the 20th century. In the 1950s, the founder of a national grocery chain bought tens of thousands of acres of western Palm Beach County and began marketing one-acre homesites in a new venture, the Royal Palm Beach Colony. After a massive drainage effort prepared the land, the Village of Royal Palm Beach incorporated in 1959, at a ceremony the Seminole chief attended to mark the village's founding on the traditional land.

The name was a nod to the royal palms and to the marketability of the "Palm Beach" name. From the start, the village planned green space into everything it built, a decision that still defines the community today. Its signature open space is Royal Palm Beach Commons Park, a former golf course transformed into a roughly 160-acre community park at the heart of a village where parks outnumber shopping plazas.
