From Pioneer Hotel Town to Beach City
The first pioneer families arrived on the banks of the Intracoastal in the 1870s, but the town truly began with a hotel. In 1895, Major Nathan Smith Boynton sailed down from Michigan and was so taken with the spot that he bought hundreds of acres and built the Boynton Hotel, which opened in 1897 and put the young settlement on the map for Northern visitors. The Town of Boynton incorporated in 1920.
The oceanfront tells the story of a classic Florida split: in 1931 the beach community east of the Intracoastal separated from the mainland town, eventually becoming the Town of Ocean Ridge, while the mainland grew into the city we know as Boynton Beach. The 1913 Boynton School still stands downtown, now the Schoolhouse Children's Museum, a reminder of how far this beach city has come.
