MacArthur's Garden City
Palm Beach Gardens was the product of one man's vision: insurance magnate John D. MacArthur. In 1959 he announced plans to build a "garden city" on thousands of acres of former dairy and ranch land in northern Palm Beach County, with tree-lined streets, planned neighborhoods, and green space at its core. The city incorporated in June 1959, and its first census recorded a population of one: a squatter MacArthur allowed to stay on the land.
Two landmarks built the city's modern identity. In 1965, MacArthur persuaded the Professional Golfers' Association to bring its headquarters to the city by building it championship courses, planting the seeds of the golf culture that still surrounds it. And in 1988, The Gardens Mall opened as the largest mall in Florida at the time, cementing Palm Beach Gardens as a shopping and dining destination. Today the city of roughly 60,000 is a master-planned success story of golf, upscale retail, and MacArthur's garden-city vision.
