From Cattle Ranch to Planned City
Port St. Lucie began as one of Florida's boldest experiments in planned living. In the late 1950s, the General Development Corporation bought thousands of acres of former cattle ranch and pine flatwoods along the North Fork of the St. Lucie River and began selling homesites to buyers across the country. The city incorporated in 1961 and grew slowly at first, from a few hundred residents in 1970 to one of the largest cities in Florida today.
Modern Port St. Lucie still follows that original master plan, but its personality comes from the places built around it: the Tradition community, which opened its town square in 2003, and PGA Village, which brought the PGA of America's golf presence to the city in the 1990s.
