Brief History

From Lakeside Settlement to Beach Town

The story of Lake Worth Beach starts with a lakeside settlement founded in the mid-1880s, platted as Lucerne in 1911, and incorporated as the Town of Lake Worth in 1913. The name honors the Lake Worth Lagoon, the waterway that separates the barrier island from the mainland, and Brigadier General William J. Worth, for whom the lagoon was named. Early residents were largely farmers drawn by the winter vegetable market, but this little town east of the lagoon had something special: a beach.

A five-cent ferry once carried visitors across the lake to the ocean, where the first casino, built in the early 1900s, became the anchor of beach life. The present Casino building was built in 1922 and still stands at the edge of the sand. The city grew through the century into the artsy, walkable community it is today, and in 2019 it officially renamed itself Lake Worth Beach to celebrate the coastline that made it famous.

Buyer's Guide

What to Know Before Buying in Lake Worth Beach

Historic Charm, Historic Systems

Many homes date to the early and mid 1900s. Some have been beautifully renovated; others will need work. Budget for roof, AC, and impact windows so the total cost fits your plan.

Flood & Storm Surge

As a coastal city, parts of Lake Worth Beach sit in flood zones and surge areas near the lagoon and ocean. Confirm the FEMA zone and get a flood insurance quote before making an offer.

Walkability & Parking

The downtown core is one of the most walkable in the county. Know that parking fills up fast during festivals and season, and factor that into your daily routine.

School Boundaries

Lake Worth Beach is served by the Palm Beach County School District. Verify attendance boundaries for any address you're considering, as they can change.
