From Pioneer Port to Coastal Paradise
Long before the first lighthouse, Jupiter's story began with the Jaega and Hobe people who lived at the mouth of the Loxahatchee River. Spanish explorers took the Hobe people's name for the river, and an early mapmaker's misreading turned "Jobe" into "Jove," which shifted to Jupiter, king of the Roman gods. The name stuck, and so did the region's importance: Fort Jupiter was built during the Seminole wars, and pioneers like the DuBois family homesteaded the inlet in the 1890s.
Jupiter's most enduring landmark, the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse, was built between 1855 and 1860 atop an ancient shell mound, making it the oldest structure in Palm Beach County. The little fishing and trapping village incorporated as the Town of Jupiter in 1925 and grew steadily, and over the following decades it became one of Florida's most desirable coastal towns, famous for the inlet, its beaches, and a maritime way of life that still defines it today.
